I specialize in medieval and renaissance shawms. Brought back from the Middle East by crusaders and their accomplices in the middle ages, 'Old Europe' was dull place with few instruments except simple fipple flutes and drums. Along with ouds, rebabs, and a plethora of percussion and other instruments, the Arabic shalmei was adapted to reflect the medieval european system of church modes, and the instrument underwent further development to become a consort instrument, member of the 15th C. slide trumpet and shawm ensembles, the later 16th C. shawm and sackbut bands, and town waites which were called upon often to play for solemn or important occasions of State.
